Your pets are important to you. So you bath them, brush
them, feed them healthy meals and make sure they always
have enough water but every winter pets get out into the
snow and cold. They get lost. They get left outside and
either get ill or even die, all because owners don’t
think to protect their pet from the cold.
Much of this neglect isn’t the owner’s fault.
Many think that their dog or cat will be okay in the cold.
They have thick fur, right? But what many pet owners fail
to realize is that their pet is that their fur gives minimal
protection against the cold of winter. Many times your pet
will fall into an icy puddle or even stream or lake. If
the pet isn’t cared for properly during these accidents
they can come down with a cold or cough that will get into
their lungs and have lasting and dire consequences.
There are many ways to keep your pets warm in the winter.
One way, perhaps the most obvious, is to keep your dog or
cat inside. Providing your pet with a warm pet bed in a
warm part of the house will ensure that your pet will stay
warm and cozy as the winds outside blow. If you are taking
your pet for a walk or giving him a chance to stretch his
legs consider purchasing a pet jacket or sweater. Although
these seem like an extravagance the extra layer of warmth
will surely make all the difference.
When your pet is running around he will need a cooling
off period. It is important to keep your dog or cat warm
during this period by providing blankets and other items
that they can snuggle down in whether he’s in the
back of the car or back at home. In the wild animals build
dens to protect them and keep warm. In domestic life it’s
up to you, the owner, to provide the needed protection.
When an animal is cold it is often a good thing to have
a crate for the pet to crawl into and feel protected and
warm.
