Dogs are a lot of work, but the work can be fun! A dog
needs to be able to move around. Like most mammals a dog
needs to exercise in order to stay healthy. Before buying
a dog check out the breed descriptions to make sure you
have the right lifestyle for the type of dog you want. If
a dog comes from a very active breed consider the amount
of time you spend being active. The same is true for the
opposite. Some breeds require less exercise. Whatever you
kind of dog you decide to get you’re sure to want
to have fun with him.
Exercise doesn't have to be difficult. You don't have to
pay for it. And doing it will make both pet and owner feel
good. Following are some suggestions for fun and convenient
ways to exercise your dog:
Walking is a simple exercise and good for both of you.
It's even good for your family and the neighbors. Why? First,
because it gets you out of the house and get to know the
neighborhood. Walking is a great time to practice some training
skills, with ample opportunity to take breaks and enjoy
the scenery. Second, the neighbors will have a chance to
visit with you and your dog and say "Hello". You
might even make some new friends while traveling the neighborhood.
Most people like to play ®Frisbee, but your dog has
to learn how to catch it. If he can't (lots of dogs can't
catch a ®Frisbee), don't worry, there are lots of other
games to play with your dog. The trick is to have a collection
of balls, ropes and other chew toys to throw and retrieve.
Getting your dog running is the key!
Do you have someplace to swim? Swimming is a wonderful
exercise for you and your dog. Swimming is very good for
every part of your dog's body. When your dog gets older
and it’s more difficult to get him to play fetch swimming
is a great, and less painful way for your pet to stay in
shape!
Exercise is good for you and your dog. It will help keep
your dog's heart, lungs, and muscles strong and healthy
so he lives longer. Use toys for all kinds of running and
catching games. You want your dog to run and stretch his
legs out. This is a great time to start your exercise regimen
as well! Take your dog to spaces you enjoy, whether it’s
the beach, the park or your backyard. Exercising your dog
will keep you both happy!
